Living is Building!

“Anyone who listens to my teaching and follows it is wise, like a person who builds a house on solid rock.” Matthew 7:24

People often describe or rate a building by its location, structure, roof, or color. They often acknowledge all this but will never find it necessary to talk about its foundation. There is nothing wrong with admiring beautiful things, but there is more to a thing than what the eyes can see. For example, the life span of a house and its ability to withstanding harsh weather and condition depends significantly on its foundation.

Foundation is the most critical part or component of any building, and it is the foundation that determines how well a building will withstand storms, earthquakes, floods, and even the continuous process of the building’s construction. So likewise, as believers, our foundation in Christ is the most critical part of our Christian life. Our daily response to His command determines our position in Him. We cannot claim to be God’s children and don’t obey Him.

In John 10:27, Jesus said, “My sheep hear My voice, and I know them, and they follow Me.”

Though it is one thing to hear God’s voice and another to follow him, “do you hear his voice and follow him?” In His parable, Jesus painted a picture of two individuals who embarked on a similar project of building a house. One chose to build on the rock, while the other decided to build on the sand. After subjecting both works to harsh weather, the house on the rock was still standing while the other house could not stand.

Serving God in total obedience is by choice (Deuteronomy 30:15), just as you can choose to build your house anywhere. But one thing stands, we will have our work tried with fire according to 1 Corinthians 3:13. Pastors, bishops, deacons, etc., are not left out; all will have our work tried with fire. But, only those that have laid their foundation in the rock of obedience to God’s word will reign with Him on the last day. So, build well. Proverbs 12:28 says, “There is life in the path of righteousness, but another path leads to death.”

Prayer:
1. Father, give me the grace to live in total obedience to your word.
2. Oh Lord, help me to walk in the way of wisdom and understanding of your Word in Jesus’ name. Amen
