Our Duty!
“Let us hear the conclusion of the whole matter: Fear God, and keep his commandments: for this is the whole duty of man.” Ecclesiastics 12:13
Solomon, the writer of the book of ecclesiastics, was a famous king. His fame didn’t just result from being a king; he was full of wisdom and riches. In his book, he revealed all the things he found in life; the treasures, the fame, the pursuit for knowledge, money, and wisdom, and he considered them all as vanity.
After the whole story in the book of ecclesiastics, Solomon came to a very striking conclusion, a valid point everyone must live to consider. He said, “Let us hear the conclusion of the whole matter,” in other words, this is the main point of the entire 12 chapters, “Fear God and keep his commandments.” That was very precise and concise, to fear God and obey His commandments.
Fearing God implies that honor, love, reverence, obey, submit, and live for Him alone. The writer added that it is our duty, the whole duty of every man to fear and obey Him. If Solomon, the one whom God blesses with wisdom, could give us this divine conclusion, then we must pay much attention to it, because in that conclusion is genuinely where our success is found.
A man’s success is not found in the pursuit of worldly things; of course, they are vanity, and they will surely perish. But true success is found when we have our root in God when we fear and follow his leading with the whole of our lives. Ensure not to chase vanity, be more focused on the eternal life which Jesus offers. Deuteronomy 6:2 says, “As long as you live, you and your descendants are to honor the LORD your God and obey all his laws that I am giving you, so that you may live in that land a long time.”
Prayer:
Lord, beyond everything in life, help me to follow and do your will. Put your fear in me that I may reverence you.
