The Power in the Name of Jesus! 4
“And the evil spirit answered and said Jesus I know, and Paul I know; but who are you?” Acts 19:15
The name of Jesus is powerful because it is the name of the Son of God. When we call upon the name of Jesus, we are opening ourselves up to receive His blessings and His protection. Jesus is always willing to help us, no matter what we are going through. The name of our Savior is not just a name but an identity that we identify with because it carries life. Jesus died on the cross so that we could be forgiven for our sins and rose from the dead so that we could have eternal life. Jesus is the only one who can save us from our sins. When we call upon the name of Jesus, we are putting our trust in Him.
As you can see from today’s Bible verse of devotion, the demon acknowledges the name of Jesus by what he knew of Christ in the past, eternity, and the present, so he dares not mess up where they call the name of Jesus in truth and in Spirit. That’s why it is quite evident that the sons of Sceva did not call the name of Jesus in truth and in Spirit. It’s one thing to acknowledge the name of Jesus out of fear of what he might do to you if you don’t. It’s quite another to truly know Jesus – to know him in the past eternity, in the present, and in the future.
John 1:3 says, “All things were made through him, and without him was not anything made that was made.”
The demon knew Jesus’ back in the past eternity before time even began. He knew Jesus as the creator of the universe, the one who had power over all things. But the demon also knows Jesus in the present. Jesus is the one who has authority over all evil spirits. He can cast them out and banish them to the place of torment. And the demon knows Jesus in the future. Jesus is the one who will judge the living and the dead. He will punish the wicked and reward the righteous.
Of course, the demon still messes around with some of the children of God when God allows him to do so (see the case of Job). But even from God’s permission or from mistakes the children might have made, the demon still trembles at the name of Jesus. He knows that Jesus is holy and righteous. He knows that Jesus is the one true God. So the next time you say the name of Jesus, remember that it carries great power. It’s not a name to be taken lightly. When you say Jesus’ name, you’re proclaiming his authority over sin and darkness. You’re proclaiming his power to overcome evil. Therefore, invoke that name for protection and healing or for any circumstance you expect a turnaround. In the name of Jesus, we can be assured of God to turn things around for our good. Amen.
John 3:16-17 says, “For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life. For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world so that the world might be saved through him.”
Prayer:
1. Oh Lord Jesus, empower me to know you more. Help me to know that you love me.
2. Dear Father, I seek Your protection from all enemies and the lies of the devil in Jesus’ name. Amen
