“Then I saw that all toil and all skill in work come from a man’s envy of his neighbor. This also is vanity and a striving after wind.” Ecclesiastes 4:4
The only competition worth engaging in is the one against our own limitations and self-doubt (Galatians 6:4). So, in the sacred bond of marriage, it is crucial for couples to remember that they are not opponents but teammates. However, in life’s challenges, it is easy to fall into a vicious competition cycle. This mindset can slowly chip away at trust and intimacy.
As Amos 3:3 wisely states, Can two walk together unless they agree? It is essential for spouses to align their hearts and minds, fostering unity instead of engaging in unnecessary competition. God’s design for marriage calls us to cherish and honor one another. In 1 Peter 3:7, we are reminded that husbands must live considerately with their wives, recognizing them as equal heirs of God’s grace. Let compassion and understanding guide your actions instead of trying to prove superiority or worth.
Colossians 3:13-14 says, “Bearing with one another and, if one has a complaint against another, forgiving each other; as the Lord has forgiven you, so you also must forgive. And above all these put on love, which binds everything together in perfect harmony.”
The apostle Paul reminds us in Ephesians 4:31-32 to put away bitterness, wrath, anger, and malice from our relationships. These destructive emotions fuel the fire of competition and create walls between partners. Instead, choose forgiveness and empathy to nurture your connection. Lastly, Ephesians 5:33 encourages husbands to love their wives as themselves and wives to respect their husbands. When we embrace this divine principle rather than competing against one another, we build a strong foundation for love and harmony.
Remember that marriage is not a battleground; it is a sacred space meant for companionship and support. Break free from the cycle of competition by communicating openly with each other about your needs and desires. Celebrate each other’s strengths instead of feeling threatened by them. Together, let us strive towards unity in our marriages – where trust flourishes amidst vulnerability, intimacy blossoms through genuine connection, and love unites us as true teammates on this beautiful journey called life. Amen. Colossians 3:14 says, “And above all these put on love, which binds everything together in perfect harmony.” Amen.
