Then the LORD appeared to Abram and said, “To your descendants I will give this land.” And there he built an altar to the LORD, who had appeared to him. And he moved from there to the mountain east of Bethel, and he pitched his tent with Bethel on the west and Ai on the east; there he built an altar to the LORD and called on the name of the LORD. Genesis 12:7-8
Did you know that the word “altar” comes from the Latin ‘altare’, which means “to elevate”? This is a powerful reminder that our worship — when genuine — lifts us higher, closer to God. In stark contrast, idols are nothing more than lifeless imitations of our deepest longings, promising fulfillment yet leading us into the darkness of enslavement. We see this in Genesis 12:7–8, where Abram built altars — symbols of devotion and surrender — each one a reminder of his covenant with God, not a placeholder for earthly desires.
Scripture beckons us in Romans 12:1 to offer our bodies as living sacrifices, holy and pleasing to God. This act of worship transforms our mundane moments into divine encounters. When we build altars in our lives, we align our hearts with heaven. 1 John 5:21 warns us, “Little children, keep yourselves from idols,” reminding us that what we choose to elevate ultimately shapes our character.
Romans 12:1 says, “Therefore, I urge you, brothers and sisters, in view of God’s mercy, to offer your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and pleasing to God—this is your true and proper worship.”
How are you building your altar today? Perhaps it’s in the quiet moments of your daily routine or in a conversation with a loved one. Each prayer, each act of kindness, can be an altar where you invite God’s presence into your life. Remember, “What you build will build you.” Are the structures in your life fostering love and connection with God, or are they pulling you away?
May I declare over you today that as you choose altars over idols, you will experience freedom and abundance. Your faith, however small, can move mountains. Think of Abram; his obedience brought blessings not just to himself but to generations to come. Let your faith be in action, offering up your worries, your status, and your desires to God, as a fragrant sacrifice that honors Him. Amen. 1 Peter 2:11 says, “Beloved, I urge you, as foreigners and exiles, to abstain from the desires of the flesh, which war against your soul.” Amen.
Prayer for the Day!
Heavenly Father, thank You for the gift of being in Your presence. Lord, make my life an altar; receive my work as worship. Help me to seek You above all else and to walk away from anything that distracts from my devotion to You. Fill my heart with Your Spirit, that I may build altars of love and faith. In Jesus name, Amen.
