“As iron sharpens iron, so one person sharpens another.” Proverbs 27:17
Have you ever noticed how growth often feels like the rough edges of sandpaper smoothing out a beautiful piece of wood? Just as a carpenter meticulously works to refine wood to perfection, God is subtly shaping our character through experiences that may feel uncomfortable but are ultimately for our good. This is vividly illustrated in the story of Jacob wrestling with God at Peniel, where his encounter transformed him, igniting a change that would influence generations (Genesis 32:22-32).
Just as Proverbs 27:17 reminds us, “As iron sharpens iron, so one person sharpens another.” In our interactions and experiences, we often discover that the friction can lead to a finer, stronger version of ourselves. Consider how Philippians 1:6 reassures us that “He who began a good work in you will carry it on to completion.” This promise empowers us to recognize that each moment of discomfort is a necessary step toward our divine purpose.
Hebrews 12:11 says, “No discipline seems pleasant at the time, but painful. Later on, however, it yields a harvest of righteousness and peace for those who have been trained by it.”
It’s essential to reflect on the moments this year where you felt God was quietly chiseling away at your spirit. C.S. Lewis poignantly states, “Pain is God’s chisel.” While that may sound daunting, the truth is that these moments contribute to our spiritual maturity, much like the disciplined training described in Hebrews 12:11, where it speaks of the peaceful fruit of righteousness that follows.
As you begin to identify these moments, remember the slogan “Smooth souls, sharp purpose.” Your experiences, however rough, are instrumental in crafting a life rich with purpose and clarity. With each encounter, like the carpenter shaping wood, God is meticulously crafting you into an instrument designed for a unique mission. Amen. Philippians 1:6 says, “being confident of this, that he who began a good work in you will carry it on to completion until the day of Christ Jesus.” Amen.
Prayer for the Day!
Heavenly Father, thank You for the sandpaper moments of life that shape us into who You’ve called us to be. Brethren, I pray that the Holy Spirit empower you to see God’s hand in every experience and to trust in the process of growth. May your hearts be softened to receive His guidance, and your steps be ordered by His wisdom. May patience anchor you in seasons of waiting, and may hope rise within you when the path seems dim. Let gratitude be the song on your lips and love the work of your hands, so that Christ may be seen in all you do. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
