Guard Your Mouth!

Guard your Mouth!

“Those who guard their mouths and their tongues keep themselves from calamity.” Proverb 21:23

The tongue is the most powerful part of the body as it is the window to the soul. There are many openings to the body. They are all important to guard and protect from germs and other harmful substances. However, when you speak, your mouth is a vessel for the thoughts that come out of your mind. So, one has to guard what comes out of the mouth.

There are three times when you should not talk. First, when you are angry. This time is a very bad time to talk because you will not go back on everything you have said when you are angry. Words are like raw eggs; when they fall, they cannot be taken back. Even if you apologize for what you have said, you cannot take it back.

Proverbs 10:19 says, “When there are many words, transgression and offense are unavoidable, But those who control their lips and keeps thoughtful silence are wise.”

Secondly, when you are happy. You are super excited and high up there that you feel you can do anything you want. You will feel like promising people things that you might not be able to fulfill. It is a sin to promise and not fulfill. Remember King Herod when he was so excited that he promised his step-daughter to give her anything she wants. He did not know she was going to ask for John’s head. He had no choice but to do what he promised.

Lastly, when you are tired or overwhelmed. You let your guards down when you are tired, and you will be an easy target to spill your secrets. Always wait till you are sober before you talk about any crucial matter. Jesus told his disciples that what goes into the mouth does not defile the body but what comes out of the mouth. The tongue has the power of life and death. You are what you say, but I encourage you to use your mouth wisely. James 1:1 says, “My beloved brethren, understand this: Everyone should be quick to listen, slow to speak, and slow to anger.”

Prayer:
1. Help me to guard my mouth, Lord.
2. Psalm 19:14; Oh Lord, let the words of my mouth and the meditation of my heart be acceptable in your sight in Jesus’ name.
