“The merciful man doeth good to his own soul: but he that is cruel troubleth his own flesh.” Proverbs 11:17
In the ever-changing landscape of life, it is imperative to remember the importance of self-care. Just as a tree needs nourishment and care to thrive in changing seasons, we too must tend to our own well-being. As Proverbs 11:17 reminds us, those who are kind benefit themselves, but the cruel bring ruin on themselves. By prioritizing self-care, we benefit ourselves and those around us.
Think of self-care as filling your cup so that you have more to pour out onto others. It is vital for our mental, physical, and spiritual health. The story of Elijah being fed by an angel in the wilderness (1 Kings 19:5-8) illustrates how God provides for our needs even in moments of exhaustion and despair. Similarly, taking time for ourselves allows us to be replenished and better equipped to face life’s challenges.
Mark 9:50 says, “Salt is good, but if the salt has lost its saltiness, how will you make it salty again? Have salt in yourselves, and be at peace with one another.”
As Mother Teresa beautifully said, Be faithful in small things because it is in them that your strength lies. Small acts of self-care can have a significant impact on our overall well-being. By carving out time for rest, relaxation, and renewal, we honor the temple that houses our spirit. Just as Jesus often retreated to a quiet place for prayer and reflection (Luke 5:16), we too must prioritize moments of solitude and rejuvenation.
Remember that self-care is not selfish; it is a necessary act of stewardship for the gift of life that we have been given. As you navigate the winds of change, make sure to nurture yourself along the way. For when we care for ourselves with love and intentionality, we honor the divine spark within us and shine brighter for all to see. Amen. Matthew 5:7 says, “Blessed are the merciful, for they will be shown mercy.” Amen.
Prayer for the Day!
Oh dear Lord, I humbly seek your guidance in honoring the sacred vessel that contains my soul. Grant me the strength to care for my physical body as a cherished temple worthy of reverence and love with food, exercise, and rest, respecting its boundaries and limitations. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
