“Remember your mercy, O Lord, and your steadfast love, for they have been from of old.” Psalm 25:6
Mercy is a guiding light that shines through the darkness, bringing hope and comfort to lost people. It is an essential virtue we must embody, allowing us to extend compassion and understanding toward others. The Bible tells us in Luke 6:36, “Be merciful, just as your Father is merciful.” This commandment reminds us to show mercy towards our fellow beings. Remember, The reward for being merciful may not always be immediate or obvious, but God’s promises guarantee it.
I remember a farmer who started on a journey from his house to the next town to receive some money. As he was about to step out of the house, his only little girl came running up to him and said, ” Daddy, don’t forget the gift you promised me today.” The dad replied, ‘ yes. I will give it to you today when I return home. As the farmer went out, he met his creditors, who gave him the amount they owed him. He then went to buy the gift for his daughter as promised. However, on his way home late that night, it was stormy, rainy, and dark everywhere.
Ephesians 4:32 says, “Be kind to one another, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, as God in Christ forgave you.”
While he decided to continue his journey back to his house, he heard a child’s loud cry in the village’s wildest part. The farmer first thought to himself that this might be a device plan of arm robbery as he was known to carry money. But after hearing the cry again, he was moved with compassion by the sound of a voice saying, ” help me, I am lost.” So the farmer changed his mind; whatever happened to him, he would not give up finding that child to save her. So he searched and walked towards the sound, where he saw a young girl drenched with rain and shivering with cold. He quickly wrapped his coat around her without knowing who she was or what she was doing.
The farmer promptly rode home as fast as possible to give better care to the little girl. When he reached home, he found his neighbor standing around his crying wife. One said to another, ” don’t break the news yet; he may not take it lightly.” As the farmer set the sleeping child with the wrapped cloak down, the wife looked and saw that the child was their missing girl; she burst into tears of joy while she held her husband. The little girl lost her way while looking for her dad, who had promised her a gift. However, the farmer saved the girl’s life, who happened to be his daughter, without knowing. Mercy brings sweet rewards, be merciful. Luke 6:31 says, “Do to others as you would have them do to you.”
Prayer:
Oh Lord, help me show compassion towards my fellow humans and those in need in Jesus’ name. Amen.
