One Good Turn Deserves Another!

Now David said, “Is there still anyone who is left of the house of Saul, that I may show him kindness for Jonathan’s sake?” 2 Samuel 9:1

The ants were searching for food at the river banks when one of them tumbled into the water. The other ants gathered at the bank but could do nothing to help. There came a pigeon, flying overhead, plunged into the trees, broke off a branch, and released it into the water close to the little ant. He climbed on it and was saved.

Some days later, a bird-catcher was hunting for pigeons, came with a bunch of twigs that he had coated in poison. But the ants saw what he was going to do and were determined to save their friendly pigeon. They swarmed out of their nest and crept all over the bird-catcher, biting and stinging him. He threw away his bunch of poisoned twigs and ran away as fast as his legs could carry him.

Proverbs 3:27 says, “Do not withhold good from the deserving when it is within your power to act.”

We are in a small world. Whatsoever we do today will undoubtedly come back at us with a reward in one way or the other. Most times, the reward outlives us and visits even generations after us. In our text today, we can see how a father’s good deed restored hope for his son. The linage of Saul was forgotten after his Death until the good deed of his son Jonathan intervened. It only takes the evil of one man to throw a family into extinction (Romans 5:12).

As children of God, the Bible is our watch world, so we don’t need to go with the crowd. The fact that many people or our loved ones are doing something does not always make it right. Some parents even force their children to be good to only people that are good to them. This ungodly character has to stop. Supposing Jonathan followed his father’s footsteps who tried all he could to destroy David, his linage would have been forgotten forever. Let’s learn to be good to everyone as someone you can help today could be your only chance of help tomorrow. Galatians 6:10 says, “As we have therefore opportunity, let us do good unto all humankind, especially unto them who are of the household of faith.”

Prayer:
1. Lord, help me to be good to all just as you have been good to me.
2. Psalm 33:20; Oh Lord, my soul waits for you; you are my help and shield in Jesus’ name.
