“When they heaped abuse on Him, He did not retaliate; when He suffered, He made no threats, but entrusted Himself to Him who judges justly.” 1 Peter 2:23
As we contemplate Jesus’ final moments on the cross, we encounter profound statements that resonate deeply with our human experience. Each of the seven last words serves as a poignant reminder of both His suffering and His unwavering love for humanity. “As He faced the end, Christ’s words became a bridge between pain and hope, showing us that even in suffering, there is a promise of redemption.” Through these words, we can find comfort, encouragement, and guidance in our trials.
The first statement, “Father, forgive them, for they know not what they do” (Luke 23:34), speaks volumes about the heart of Christ. Even amidst immense suffering and betrayal, He exemplifies unconditional forgiveness. This profound act challenges us to extend grace to those who may have wronged us, reminding us that forgiveness is not merely an option but a calling. In our own lives, when we feel wronged or hurt, we can look to Christ’s example and choose to forgive, thus freeing ourselves from the burdens of resentment.
Colossians 3:13 says, “Bear with one another and forgive any complaint you may have against someone else. Forgive as the Lord forgave you.”
Next, we hear Jesus proclaim to the repentant thief, “Today you will be with me in paradise” (Luke 23:43). This declaration is a powerful testament to the hope of salvation. It reassures us that no matter how far we may stray or how late we may come to faith, God’s mercy is always within reach. It reminds us that even at the brink of death, there is an opportunity for redemption and new life. This promise encourages us to share the message of hope with others who may feel lost or unworthy of grace.
In His third statement, Jesus addresses His mother and the beloved disciple: “Woman, behold your son! Behold, your mother!” (John 19:26-27). Here, we see Jesus’ deep care for family and community. Even in His final moments, He ensures that those He loves are cared for, illustrating the importance of relationships and support in times of hardship. This call to look after one another as a reminder that we are not alone in our struggles; we are part of a larger family in Christ that uplifts and supports each other.
Prayer for the Day!
Heavenly Father, thank You for the gift of Your Son and the lessons found in His last words. Help us to forgive as He forgave, to seek hope in our darkest moments, and to cherish the relationships You have blessed us with. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
