“Wait patiently for the LORD. Be brave and courageous. Yes, wait patiently for the LORD.” Psalm 27:14
Waiting Upon the Lord is like a farmer waiting for the rain to come and water his crops. He knows he cannot do anything to make the rain faster, but he must trust that it will come in God’s timing, even though waiting upon the Lord goes beyond praying and expecting the answer to our prayers. But our action must be deliberate and aimed to draw the attention of God to the present situation or matter at hand because everything we do must involve seeking the face and mind of God over an issue for instruction and direction. Therefore, waiting upon the Lord requires patience, persistence, consecration, and a high level of sensitivity.
Let us look at the prayer of Habakkuk: “I will stand upon my watch, and set me upon the tower, and will watch to see what he will say unto me, and what I shall answer when I am reproved. And the Lord answered me, and said, write the vision, and make it plain upon tables, that he may run that read it, for the vision is yet for an appointed time, but at the end, it shall speak, and not lie: though it tarries, wait for it; because it will surely come, it will not tarry”. So we can see that Habakkuk’s sense organs were fully alert, watching, and very attentive to details with unlimited patience.
Ecclesiastes 3:11 says, “God has made everything beautiful in its time. So also, he has put eternity into man’s heart, yet so that he cannot find out what God has done from the beginning to the end.”
When it comes to waiting upon the Lord, haste and distractions have no place. To wait upon the Lord means to investigate a matter critically and seek light and clarity in confusing matters. Therefore, waiting upon the Lord requires patience and focus. It is not about sitting idly by but actively seeking God’s guidance through prayer, meditation, and studying His word. In this process of waiting on God for direction or answers to our prayers, we must intentionally avoid distractions that may hinder us from hearing His voice. The Lord desires to reveal Himself to us in various ways when we wait upon Him; hence it is crucial not to rush or become distracted during this time of seeking Him.
A heart filled with anxiety, doubt, and unbelief cannot wait upon the Lord. Waiting upon the Lord comes with a package of blessings aside from the purpose of waiting upon Him. When you wait upon the Lord, your strength is renewed like the eagles (Isaiah 40:31), shame and disappointments shall be far from you, and you will enjoy the presence and communion with God. Amen. Psalm 37:7 says, “Be still before the LORD and wait patiently for him; do not fret when people succeed in their ways when they carry out their wicked schemes.” Amen.
