From Ordinary to Extraordinary

“Now we have this treasure in jars of clay to show that this surpassingly great power is from God and not from us.” 2 Corinthians 4:7

The extraordinary is often disguised as the ordinary; it just takes a shift in perspective to reveal its true magnificence. The story of David being anointed king is a powerful testament to God’s sovereignty and ability to choose the most unexpected individuals for extraordinary purposes. In 1 Samuel 16, we see that David was not even considered by his family when Samuel came to Bethlehem to anoint the next king. He was merely seen as a shepherd boy, overlooked and underestimated.

Yet, it was precisely in this ordinary and seemingly insignificant position that God chose David. God’s sovereign choices with David’s story challenge our human understanding of qualifications and conventional standards. It teaches us that appearances are deceptive when discerning God’s chosen vessels. Those whom society may deem unworthy or unqualified might actually possess qualities hidden from worldly eyes but abundantly clear through divine vision.

1 Samuel 16:7 says, “But the LORD said to Samuel, “Do not consider his appearance or his height, for I have rejected him. The LORD does not look at the things people look at. People look at the outward appearance, but the LORD looks at the heart.”

Brethren, God saw something in David’s heart that made him fit for kingship – his deep trust in God and devotion towards Him. Psalm 78:70-72 further illuminates this truth about David, describing him as a shepherd who cared for his flock with integrity of heart and skillful hands. In other words, cultivating faithfulness amidst mundane tasks prepared him for leading nations with wisdom and compassion.

As we reflect upon this biblical account, let us be reminded that what seems ordinary or inconsequential in our lives could be the platform from which God launches us into His extraordinary plans. Trusting His sovereign choices means embracing our current circumstances wholeheartedly while remaining open to how He can transform them into instruments of purpose and impact beyond measure. Amen. John 8:15 says, “You judge according to the flesh; I judge no one.” Amen.
