Then Jesus said to Thomas, “Put your finger here and look at My hands. Reach out your hand and put it into My side. Stop doubting and believe.” John 20:27
“Faith is taking the first step even when you don’t see the whole staircase.” – Martin Luther King Jr. In our journey of faith, we often find ourselves facing moments of uncertainty, much like Thomas did. His declaration, “Unless I see the nail marks…” (John 20:27), resonates with many of us who wrestle with doubt and require tangible proof before we can fully trust. Yet, it’s essential to remember that doubt does not make us weak; rather, it can lead us toward a deeper understanding of God’s grace.
Doubt can act as a catalyst for growth. Just as Thomas grappled with his beliefs, we too have the opportunity to explore our uncertainties. In moments of hesitation, we can choose to draw closer to God instead of distancing ourselves from Him. The Bible reminds us in James 1:5 that if we lack wisdom, we should ask God, who gives generously to all without finding fault. Embrace your questions and allow them to guide you into a more profound relationship with Christ.
Hebrews 11:6 says, “And without faith it is impossible to please God. Anyone who approaches Him must believe that He exists and rewards those who earnestly seek Him.”
It’s important to recognize that our doubts do not define our faith. When Thomas demanded evidence, he inadvertently placed boundaries around his belief. However, God invites us into a faith that transcends our need for proof. In Romans 10:17, we read, “Consequently, faith comes from hearing the message, and the message is heard through the word about Christ.” As we immerse ourselves in Scripture and community, our faith can grow even amidst uncertainty.
Just as Thomas’s story didn’t end in doubt, yours doesn’t have to either. After encountering the risen Christ, Thomas’s faith was strengthened, leading him to proclaim, “My Lord and my God!” (John 20:28). This transformation shows us that doubt can be a stepping stone to a more profound conviction. Allow your uncertainties to propel you toward seeking God’s presence and truth in your life. John 14:1 says, “Do not let your hearts be troubled. You believe in God; believe in Me as well.
