The Mind: Its Functions and Mysteries!

The Mind: Its Functions and Mysteries!

“To be carnally minded is death, but to be spiritually minded is life and peace.” Romans 8:6

In the letter to the Romans, Paul wrote that those who live according to the flesh set their minds on the things of the flesh, but those who live according to the Spirit set their minds on the things of the Spirit. He says that the mind controlled by the flesh is death, but the mind controlled by the Spirit is life and peace.

Paul clearly states that there are two very different ways of living – according to the flesh or the Spirit. Those who live according to the flesh are controlled by their sinful nature, leading to death. On the other hand, those who live according to the Spirit are controlled by God’s Holy Spirit, leading to life and peace. So, which should we choose? The answer is clear – we should choose life! Because the carnal mind is a mindset on fleshy desires, lusts, evil concupiscence, and every form of worldliness, it is a mindset on earthly desires alone.

Ephesians 4:17 says, “This I say, therefore, and testify in the Lord, that you should no longer walk as the rest of the Gentiles walk, in the futility of their mind.”

The Carnal mind doesn’t seek the things of God and lacks the will to please God. Every unregenerate or unsaved soul possesses a reprobate mind that makes them do contrary things. A carnal mind is a reprobate in nature; it is not acceptable and is often rejected by God. Such a mind is of no value and worth before God (Romans 1:28). You will find it difficult to obey the commandments of God if you have a carnal mind because such a mind is not subjected to the will of God.

A carnal mind operates according to the cause of this world, according to the prince of the power of the air that now works in the children of disobedience. You are not far from being a gentile or unbeliever if you still have a carnal mind as a believer; the gentiles are known to do things in the vanity of their mind. Because the carnal mind is full of wicked works, it is always in enmity with God Colossians 1:21. A carnal mind is terribly and spiritually sick and, if not quickly rescued, will continue to decay and can become reprobate. I pray that our minds will not lead us to decay and reprobate in Jesus’ name. Amen. Titus 1:15 says, “To the pure, all things are pure, but to the defiled and unbelieving, nothing is pure; but both their minds and consciences are defiled.”

Prayer:
1. Father Lord, deliver my mind from worldliness and fleshy desires in the name of Jesus.
2. Father Lord, purify my mind with your blood and let my thoughts be aligned to your word in the name of Jesus.
